WELCOME!
Al Andalus Ultimate Trail invites international and diverse individuals to serve as volunteers throughout the race week (June 30th – July 6th, 2023). Necessary criteria include:
- English and/or Spanish and other languages
- A driver’s license
- Staff member or competitor recommendation
- Interest in ultra and trail running
- Special skills (first aid/nursing, nutrition, physical therapy/sports related therapy, food service, building/plumbing/camping, mountain biking, or translation)
- A positive, tireless attitude
Volunteer selection is on an ongoing basis according to the needs of the event. Volunteers typically range in age from 18 – 60+ years of age. Great effort is made to attract a wide range of ages, nationalities, and backgrounds.
TASKS
The event has 10-12 full-time skilled volunteers (crew) who work closely with the management team. Volunteer orientation takes place 1 day before the event (June 30th, 2024). Volunteers may assist with competitor registration, checkpoints and water stations, the campsite, to ‘sweep’ the course (by walking at the back of the pack in each stage), ‘rove’ the course (which involves walking, cycling, or riding in a vehicle to check on competitors on the course), and a handful of other support assignments. Assignments can change throughout the week – the days can be long, hot, and intense at times – but you’re not running 67km! The volunteers’ main goal is to make the runners feel supported, both logistically and socially. Cheering and clapping are greatly encouraged!
TRAINING
Prior to the event, we provide training in the areas of checkpoint set-up and procedures, camp duties and procedures, emergency procedures, competitor relations, radio and mobile communications (the race provides mobile phones to select positions), and sweeping operations.
EXPERIENCE GAINED/WHAT’S PROVIDED
The volunteer experience is set up to be similar to that of the competitor, except that you work as support. Volunteers are expected to also be self-supported while on the course, carrying their own supplemental food (water, packed lunch, and a place in a tent are provided). In addition, volunteers are provided with 2 nights of hotel accommodations and meals (Sunday, June 30th & Friday, July 5th), including the Gala Dinner. Volunteers are also given an official staff shirt.
